Make your website work for you by Mike Linder

So you have got your business up and running, you have worked hard to get this far and you now need to start bringing in the customers. “A website is what we need” you say! So you build your website or you get somebody else to do it, its uploaded and wait for it, crash bang, hope and dreams of a million new customers from the web ruined, it does nothing, no customers, no sales, no nothing, a black hole in your business dreams. What’s gone wrong?
The website needs to optimised so that search engines like Google, Yahoo and Ask can find your site.

SEO ( search engine optimisation ) is a very very hot topic these days. How do you get your web site within the first few pages of the major search engines? How do you go about increasing your Google page rank? how do you get the search engines and directories to find your website and then index it?
There are a lot of companies out there who dedicate themselves full-time to optimising and this can cost you a large amount of money each month, money that you could use else where in your business. This is something a lot of people can’t necessarily afford to pay for or spend the time on.
However, there are a few simple things you can do yourself when building your site that will help increase your chances of having good results, below are a few of these items which you will find useful. Nothing here is difficult to do nor is it time consuming.

Title Tag
Near the very top of a web site’s source code you’ll find a few meta tags, the standard ones being the Title, Description and Keyword tags. The title tag plays a very large role in the indexing of your web site, that it is considered the most important of the three.
A page title is the first thing a search engine will look at when determining just what the website page is about. It is also the first thing potential visitors will see when reading your search engine listing.
It’s important to include a few relevant keywords in the title tag but don’t go overboard you don’t want to do what’s known as “keyword stuffing” which does nothing but make your web site look like spam. Most people will include either the company name, or title of the particular page here, as well.

Meta Tags
There are two primary meta tags in terms of getting your site out there, the description and the keyword tag. It’s long debated whether the search engines use the description tag as far as ranking your results. However it is one of the important tags because it is listed in your search result, it is what users read when your link comes up and what makes them decide whether or not to click on your link.
Be sure to include a few very relevant keywords in this tag, but don’t fill it with keywords. The description tag should read like a sentence, not a keyword list.

Due to “keyword stuffing” many search engines now completely disregard the keyword tag. It is no longer as important as it was years ago, however it doesn’t hurt to include them in your source code.
When you create your keyword list, you will want to think of the specific terms people will type in when searching for a site like yours. Just don’t go overboard, too many duplicates are not a good thing (as in dog, big dog, small dog, dogs, big dogs, small dogs and so on). Those are all basically the same keywords, so pick one or two variations at the most and move on.

Proper Use of the Heading Tags
Heading tags are an important element to consider when writing out your site. Use of heading tags helps the users, the web browsers and the search engines know where the major key points of your site are.
Your main page title should use the

tag such as

Welcome to whatever

this shows what your page is about. The use of additional tags, such as

and

are equally important by helping to break down your website into sections, these tag go right down to

and also give a visual break in the text. The various heading tags give a priority to the content and help to index your website properly.

Alt Attributes on Images
Alt attributes are when you hover your mouse cursor over an image on the net some text will appear. Putting good alt attributes on your images serves two purposes. In terms of SEO, putting a brief yet good descriptive alt attribute along with your image, places relevant text to your source code that the search engines can see when indexing your site. The more relevant the text on your page the better chance you have of getting higher rankings on the search engines.

Title Attributes on Links
Including title attributes on links is yet another very important step that any good web site will have. As a note, you should use descriptive text for your links. “Click here” doesn’t tell a person anything or the search engines what the link is. At least put a title tag that will explain that “Click Here” means “whatever you want it to mean” for example. Better yet make the main link text like “whatever you want it to mean” this will give a little bit of value to the link.

XML Sitemap
XML sitemaps are used by the search engines in order to index your site.
This list of ALL pages, posts, etc. of your site also includes information such as the date the page was last changed. You will need a site map.

Relevant Content
Having some content relevant to your main page or site topic is one of the most important aspect of a page. You can put all the keywords you want in the meta tags and alt image tags, etc but if the actual readable text on the page is not relevant to the target keywords, it ends up being a waste of time.
While it is important to include as many keywords in your page as possible, it is just as important for it to read well and make sense.

When creating your site, try to write naturally, explaining whatever information you’re discussing. Make it relevant, and have it make sense to the reader. Even if you trick the search engines into thinking your page is great when a customer arrives at the site and can’t understand your information they will leave your site and move on to the next.

Building Links
We’ve all heard of the Google Page Rank it seems to be every web site owner’s dream to have as high a page rank as possible.
DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE LINK FARMS for getting links to your site.
Write a Blog with relevant content, put a link to your site in the blog.

Social Media
Social Media is a very large factor these days in getting your web site noticed, that it’s an important element to include in your plan.

Social media ranges from the social networks like Twitter and Facebook to social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Digg and so on. Once you start to build your own networks and add quality content on your web site or blog, you’ll see traffic to your web site increasing.

How to write articles that attract readers by Leah

People often ask me in email and via my blogs for tips on writing articles for the Internet, so I’ve written a brief ‘how to write articles for the Internet guide’ here to

refer to.

Everyone that does business on the Internet can benefit from understanding

‘how to write articles for the Internet’

and in the first instance

‘how people read articles on the Internet’

Internet users read differently when surfing the Internet than they might when reading a newspaper, magazine, book, leaflet etc.

Knowing how users read on the Internet is thus very important in ensuring that your content is read.

Internet readers skim read looking for keywords and phrases that lead them to the juicy tit-bit they are looking for. Helping to direct them to that information before they click away to another site is thus very important.

Meanwhile, if you need them to read ALL your information, for your own ends you need to write in a way that reduces the skimming.

A few good rules of thumb include:

  • Having a summary of page content at the top of the page in bullet list form.

Some sites link directly to that paragraph for quick location by the reader. This is very helpful!

  • Having a summary of your main services and benefits on every page.

This is important as a reader might find your site not via the main page but via one of the other pages. If they don’t know via that page what you do, they might not stick around long enough to find out.

Basics of writing for the Internet

  • Short paragraphs 3-4 lines max
  • Bullet point lists (breaks up blocks of text - allows easy access to info)
  • Bold important words that the user might find of interest
  • Headings for paragraphs
  • Try to write as if speaking to the reader
  • Keep content concise
  • Do not be verbose, not every reader has English as a first language and everyone is not educated to degree level.
  • If you have space, leave a line between each bullet point for extra visibility.
  • Avoid white on a coloured background - it requires more ‘effort’ to read. Some cool sites favour white on black. Jury is out on how effective that is. My opinion is not as effective as black on white.
  • Size 12 -14 font is preferable to small font. Again it’s easier to read.
  • Don’t clutter your page with distractions unless you want the user to stop reading and view that distraction. Ie moving banners, popups etc.
  • Music isn’t a good one as people have different music tastes. It could be an instant turn off.
  • Flash intros can be enough to send people who want fast access to content to click away rather than waiting while the page loads.
  • Ariel font size 12 is the most readabale according to this study.
  • There is a lot more to learn about how to write articles for the Internet
  • Here is a really great resource which details the research carried out into how people read on the Internet as well as great tips on how to write for the Internet.

How to write articles for websites that attract search engine traffic by Leah

If you are writing articles on the Internet or website content you may have seen people mentioning the value of ‘keywords’ or talking about ‘seo’ but never properly understood what was meant.

Either this or you write away and never give factors that influence search engines a thought.

If you do write on the web for any purpose and you want search engines to find your content so that your readers can then find you, you can benefit from learning about & using keywords and how to seo your website content.

What is seo?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation and it simply means that the website or its content (or both) have been constructed and written to maximise the chances of being picked up and ranked highly by search engines.

As a writer of website content, articles, blog posts etc. it is very useful to understand a little of how search engines choose articles to rank highly and also to learn how to seo your own content to ensure it gets as many readers as possible.

Wikipedia says this about seo

“Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. “

What are keywords?

Keywords are words or phrases that writers place in their articles or blogs (content) that are relevant to the topic but also might be terms which people enter into search engines with high frequency.

In other words, the aim of keywords is to be matched with what a lot of people are looking for and then when Google throws up a list of results you might be in the top few pages of Google, if not the first page of Google!

The better the keywords the more likely this will be the case.

Here is a great FREE keyword tool.

When you enter a word in their tool bar, one that relates to your topic/product Google will give you a list of their most popular keyword phrases and place them in order of popularity. You can select from exact phrase, broad phrase and so on.

Keyword tools are a must for any writer who wants to SEO their content and increase/improve their Google page rank.

Here is a free question generator tool.

The info on the free question finder page says this:

“People often type questions into search engines. Now you can find these questions, answer them and get some great search traffic.”

This free question finding tool is great for finding questions that people might be entering directly into their search bar. If your article provides the answer, using their exact question (one that is highly entered) in your title, increases your chances of search engines ranking your content highly and users finding your articles.

WARNING re keyword density

Some people go utterly bonkers with keywords and that is now counter productive as these articles are being identified by Google as keyword spam. Read here for more details on keyword stuffing and why you shouldn’t over do keyword use in your articles.

I would myself try not to use more than three duplicate keyword phrases in any article.

Keyword phrases in titles are useful but add a unique spin tail end or start to grab both human and Google bot attention.

Finally, here is a very useful article on

How to market your online articles avoiding large submissions to article directories.

Article Writers - why you need one

by Enzo F Cesario

Author: Enzo F. Cesario

Content is king. Your web presence needs content that your audience will be interested in, period. People go to websites for the content they provide. They read web comics for amusement, visit consumer advocacy sites to inform themselves, visit political blogs to find causes to champion - in short, people visit websites to find things out.

Whether it’s for shopping or simple erudition, a large part of the web process involves reading, and the people doing the reading want to look through something of quality. You have a website, you have a product, and you have the motivation. Now you need to ask yourself - do you have the writer?

Who Needs a Professional Article Writer?

At the basic level, everyone seriously looking to make an impact on web audiences needs a dedicated article writer. Hobby writing for web content is fine for personal projects, but it doesn’t drum up a great deal of interest in the long term. It has been demonstrated again and again, the most successful websites are those that regularly produce the content their audience wants, the more frequently the better. So the need for an article writer should actually be taken as a given. The more pressing question then becomes, “Who should that writer be?”

Who Indeed?

In some cases, the answer is obvious - you. You know your material, you’re able to write confidently, and you’ve got inspiration in buckets. In this case, good, the problem is solved. Go and write that content, and perhaps pass it by a talented associate now and again for review.

However, this obviously isn’t always the case. Some site owners are good promoters and businessmen, but lack the highly developed writing skill necessary to really dig into a piece and make it shine for the audiences even once, much less week after week or day upon day. Or perhaps the owner feels comfortable writing some articles, but wants another point of view in specialized or technical pieces.

In this case, the owner needs to acquire a professional writer to provide these services. The trick here lies in recognizing your strengths and limitations, and identifying exactly what the needs of your site are.

The Writer You Need

As with any hiring process, selecting a good writer requires understanding the business in question. Each site has its own unique needs, and should seek to acquire writers who meet those needs. It certainly is true that many people can write effectively on many topics, but the impact will be greatest when the writer is chosen for abilities directly relating to the job at hand.

For example, a site focusing on producing highly technical how-to manuals for home chemistry will demand a very different writer than a site focusing on topical, biting political satire. Each demands a professional who cannot only write well, but understands the topic itself and can write believably. Someone with no experience in politics will quickly be identified in the latter case, and in the former someone who flunked basic chemistry won’t be able to write more than superficial material at their best.

Obviously, the writer also must be good at writing itself - they must be able to construct effective sentences, use proper syntax, and command the language in a manner that keeps readers both interested and informed. Most importantly, they need to be able to write specifically at the level of the typical audience for the site. Masters’ degree level academic writing can be marvelous and compelling in peer reviewed journals, but would be entirely out of place on the aforementioned satirical archive.

How to Find Them

The key to getting the best writer for a website is research. Once you understand your needs as far as the writer goes, it’s time to begin looking for them. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to do so despite the overwhelming anonymity and size of the web.

First, consider your own colleagues and acquaintances. Frequently we have many associates in our field of specialty, and many of them harbor hidden talents. Consult with your co-workers and others that you know, to see if they can meet the needs at hand.

Another source of information on professional writers is the plethora of freelance writing websites. There are dozens of sites employing short-term writers on a variety of projects with skill levels ranging from high school and college level writing to highly technical productions involving text and multimedia elements. Frequently, these sites employ a ratings and review system, allowing you to look into their reputation and perhaps their prior work history.

Additionally, there is always the interview. This need not be a physical sit-down session - it can consist of posting an advertisement seeking a talented writer along with a requirement that they submit writing samples (either previously published pieces or unique work based on the site’s requirements). This will frequently result in a deluge of applicants, so owners are advised to be prepared to so some heavy reading in this case.

For good content on your website, the key is to identify the exact needs of your site, find the exact style and skill of writer you need, and then to strive to meet that need unfailingly. Have an open mind and be willing to adapt to new, good ideas, but stick with the goal and vision for your site and find the best person to fill the position you’ve created.
